As a child, Emiko not only had to deal with the divorce of her parents but also with abandonment from her older brother. Her only support would be her mother, and as the years went by Emiko grew more and more resentful towards Ichiro, to the point where she compared him to their father in the heat of an argument. This caused him to leave for good, but it was different now that she knew he wasn’t coming back. Emiko developed mixed feelings of anger and regret towards her brother. However, she wanted to appear tough. She wanted to be cold, numb, and immovable by emotions because she no longer wanted to get hurt by another person she cared about. Look where love got her mother— she has to be better than that, for both their sakes.
Emiko took fashion as her art elective in junior year and met Gemma there. Emiko never cared about gossip and didn’t make a huge deal out of Gemma’s relationship drama, so she and Gemma easily became friends.
