Gemma was friends with two other girls, Rachel and Courtney (names subject to change). They had been together since middle school and were considerably popular; they were spotted hanging out often and always posted pictures of them doing so. It also helped that Gemma was known as one of the nicest girls at their school. While most of their schoolmates saw them as close friends, they were extremely toxic to each other: they argued all the time, complained about each other behind their backs, and Gemma was manipulated to spend her money on them. The three of them also had clashing interests, often conforming to Rachel’s tastes as she was the most controlling one.
In junior year, Gemma met and began dating a senior who also happened to be in a band. Gemma always had a thing for “alternative” guys, and he was an escape from her “friends.” Later into their relationship, however, he would objectify Gemma, body-shaming her and treating her as an accessory. It didn’t become clear to her that the only thing he cared about in their relationship was sex until she caught him cheating on her with one of her “friends,” resulting in a huge fight that caught the attention of most of the school. Once she left her ex-friends and their social circle, she could express her interests that they disapproved of. She formed a new friend group from her fashion and art classes that she felt more comfortable with and didn’t judge her as much— however, she struggles with trust issues and doesn’t give herself as much love and attention as she does for her friends.
Gemma first met Emiko in their Fashion 1 class, and Ichiro at a “Battle of the Bands” concert, before she broke up with her ex. She came to the concert with Rachel and Courtney to support him and Emiko; he ended up tying with Ichiro for first place while Emiko got third.

Gemma’s name was chosen by her dad, inspired by his career. He designs jewelry and watches, while her mom is a makeup artist, allowing her to grow up surrounded by fashion.
She has a very close relationship with her parents, especially her dad. He spoils her all the time and calls her his “princess.”
At first, Emiko thought Gemma was two-faced, which is understandable considering her ex-friends.
Gemma tends to cause herself stress (especially when it comes to creative projects) by overthinking.
