Ichiro and Emiko’s parents divorced because their father realized too late that he didn’t want kids and wasn’t ready for them. Since he never got along with his dad, Ichiro felt that he was partly to blame for the divorce, felt unwanted, and would run away from home unannounced. When he was 14, he left the house for good after arguing with Emiko and their mom and got compared to their father. From then on, he became roommates with his best friend Angelo.
In high school, Ichiro began chasing love and intimacy— but his romantic partners always came and went for various reasons: wanting him just for sex, him being too much to handle, thinking he was too soft for a guy, or just romance not being right for their relationship. The feelings of unwantedness came flooding back, causing him to fall into a deep depression, isolating himself from his friends and turning to a cycle of self-sabotage and hedonism.
